Andrea Chiesi born on 6 November, 1966, in Modena (Italy) is totally taken with those industrial constructs that are slowly disappearing to make room for some chic converted warehouse, a supermarket, or an abominable McDonald's. Sheds, smokestacks, mechanical bridges, cranes and sheet-iron, red brick, which immediately suggest active hard work, punctuated by the hooter morning and evening.

Bagnoli, La Bovisa and Campi are names that today mean little or nothing, but were once synonymous with daily work, factories, the clang of metal and the glare of oxyhydrogen flame. After having photographed them, Chiesi paints them on canvas, and in the passage from photo to oils something changes: in the painting the dignity of an age seems to resurface through the stoical resistance which the constructions offer to the total blank of the background; but in reality the architectonics are none other than a simple curtain behind which lies the true pictorial mise en scène: the sole protagonist of the work is what is not there.

The artist, in the white of the backgrounds, in the desert perspectives, in the total silence of areas which have given up living, paints what is missing, namely the typical productive life of the factory, intended to give meaning to the machinery and to the vastness of the areas. There is no sign or form of life in Chiesi's paintings, but rather a lucid witness to an age by now gone forever.
