| Born 1957, Los Angeles, California (Usa). 1976-1980: B.A., University of California, San Diego (Usa). Studied with Allan Kaprow, Eleanor Antin, Newton and Helen Harrison. Lives and works in Los Angeles, California (Usa). Cameron Slocum’s work depicts scenes in which meaning has been reversed. Slocum represents the so-called “mental image” but conceals the real-life double it describes. The paintings are composed with language and derive their importance from the written word. In many, the words remain scattered in pictorial space. From this linguistic residue of single phrases or multiple words, the viewer must deduce the meaning of the scene. In this manner, the viewer is forced to search for the true meaning of the word or phrase and what it represents. Though they initially appear to catalogue the myopic world of an obsessed phenomenologist, the paintings are more similar to the recovered pages of a lost manuscript: they are interesting for their lack of narrative continuity. While viewing, or rather reading, Slocum’s paintings, we discover the erotic moments, irony, and anxiety characteristic of contemporary life. |
