| Andrea Chiesi was born on November 6, 1966 in Modena, Italy. His
work focuses on run-down industrial complexes that are slowly being
replaced by chic converted warehouses, supermarkets, and abominable
McDonald's franchises. The industrial machinery and material that dominate
his work immediately suggest active labor. The lack of any visible
productivity, however, suggests the demise of conventional industry. He
manages to capture both the death of the mechanic age the birth of the
technological era. The names Bagnoli, La Bovisa, and Campi mean little, if nothing today, but were once synonymous with daily factory work, clanging metal, and glaring oxyhydrogen flames. Chiesi photographs these sites and paints images inspired by them on large canvases using a limited palette of grays, blacks, and whites. When transcribing the photographic image onto the canvas, Chiesi alters the character of the scene. He reveals the dignity of an age by stoically depicting structures against neutral backgrounds. However, they are nothing but curtains that hide the true pictorial mise en scčne. In the end, the sole protagonist is what is not depicted. In his workagainst white backgrounds, in desert settings, absolute silence, and places devoid of life Chiesi paints what is missing: the productivity characteristic of factory life. In doing so, Chiesi imbues the machinery and vast industrial fields with both substance and meaning. There is no sign or form of life in his work, but rather a lucid awareness of an age long forgotten and lost forever. |
