Albano Guatti was born in Udine, Italy in 1950 and currently lives and works between New York and Venice. He graduated with a degree in the History of Cinema from Florence University, where he also worked as a teaching assistant. He has lived and worked in New York since 1978. Having matured in the milieu of the new avant-garde of conceptual art, Guatti has expressed himself through photography and performance from the very outset. His relationship with cinema and contemporary American minimalism is very strong and important to his work. He has exhibited in museums and private galleries throughout Europe and the United States.

Working in New York and Los Angeles, Albano Guatti operates outside the boundaries of contemporary Italian art and reflects American artistic trends. Guatti’s oeuvre primarily consists of photography, as he believes it the ideal medium for expression. A tireless traveler, Guatti works in a state of continuous movement, not only in respect to the reality he seeks to capture, but also to his own creative process. The result is what Guatti has called a "dynamic photography." The impossibility of identifying his work with a single "genre" has made his work difficult for critics to accept. Guatti, however, sees photography as a process of becoming—an authentic performance. The artist and his camera act in the creative moment and involve the unknowing public in the realization of the work.

Guatti uses the unstable condition of movement as a platform for artistic creation. Without forethought, he freezes image-flows and places successive moments next to each other to create haphazard compositions. The accumulation of impressions simultaneously creates and reveals multi- dimensional truths. The emergent image is an autonomous entity, both spontaneous and pure. In this manner, Guatti narrates life and captures everyday detail in his travel reportage. He manages to see everything: not only the misery and disease of the urban poor, but also the beauty and depth of the natural landscape. His strong sense of composition allows Guatti to construct images with great dimensional impact, which elucidate his narrations and its protagonists. He does not attempt to document reality in its totality, but to capture its details. He is intrigued by the discrepancy between first-world consumerism and third-world poverty. In his work, Guatti manages to remain firm and faithful to his subjects and his own obsessions. His work is informed by and an active and conceptual vision and his artistic process defined by its power of description.
