| Francesca Martí was born in Sóller, Mallorca (Spain) in
1957. She lives and works in Mallorca A photographer, painter, sculptor and installation artist, Francesca Martí creates powerful work which is an unusual combination of many art forms, including music and dance. The human figure is a constant presence, although in the past, series of her works have also been dedicated to such themes as fire and the household fly. She cites such diverse artists as Kees van Dongen, Wilfredo Lam and Shirin Neshat as influences, particularly for their sense of freedom and the ways in which they altered reality. In many of Martí's photographs, the skin of her human subjects have been splashed with paint. The artist later applies paint over the photographs themselves, further breaking down the barriers between the photographic document and the expressive gestures of action panting. Since 2002, Martí has introduced video into her installations, whereby the filmed movement of dancers are projected across the surfaces of her monochrome canvases. Heads and moving body parts emerge from holes torn through the paintings, distorting the figures, and confusing the ideas of what is real, what is painted, what is filmed and what is imagined.
